I second what Doc3402 said---try shooting an all-steel Smith snubby, preferably the 640 concealed-hammer version, if possible one manufactured like mine before the internal locks were built in. I have severe arthritis in my hands, and can comfortably shoot .38 Special +P 158-grain ammo in my 640.
I really favor a revolver for self-defense because of its inherent simplicity and reliability. LOTS less can go wrong with a good wheel gun than with a pistol.
