A .357 magnum with qualilty factory ammo should fill just about any need, unless of course you want to shoot Alaskan bears.
For practice / plinking you can load it with .38 special ammo, and there is a wide selection of bullet designs and loadings in both .38 & .357.
I own two. A S&W model 19 (no dash) that I carried as a duty gun for many years, and a Taurus model 617, 2", 7-shooter, that I use as a carry gun when in the mood to carry a revolver.
