Is it easy to change out a barrel on a Smith and Wesson 629 ?

It depends.
Changing out a barrel is not normally a DIY job.
S&W uses a special tool on some of the newer models that they don't want released to the public.

And to have someone do it may cost as much as purchasing another.

In some cases it is easy and some require extra work. Buy a barrel and screw it on. if when tight the underlug is on top then it will require some added work won't it?

There are specific tools involved so the job can be done without ruining the frame. Don't forget that cylinder gap has to be correct as well. It ain't a plumbing project, there is a degree of skill required. Get it done correctly or leave it be.

A 629 should be a crush fit barrel. That means there is no cross pin securuing the barrel to the frame. Very difficult to remove the barrel with out damage. I would not recommend it.

Talk to a smith. Might be possible to cut your existing barrel down instead of getting a new barrel altogether. It's not something I would advise you to do on your own.

My gunsmith cut down my 8 3/8" full lug barrel to 6" for around $100 or so, best as I recall.

Here, as 8 3/8":

And, as cut:

He was able to cut the ramp and front sight from the original barrel and mill the barrel rib out to accept the old front sight. Also got rid of that awful red plastic insert, too.
