will dry firing my 638 hurt it. I've always been told not to dry fire any gun, but I hear and read about alot of people doing it to practice. I just don't wanna damage my pistol.

Dry firing ANY firearm is not a "best practice". With many, it will not immediately do harm, but may in the long term. Some are very quick to show their dislike of dryfire. Get a set of "snap caps". For REALLY oddball calibers, make a substitute snap cap- take a fired case, punch primer, clean primer pocket, fill pocket with silicone caulking, let cure. Snap caps are cheaper than a firing pin.

I to have a couple of revolvers that they say I can dry fire, but I don`t, and I won`t, you better not dry fire any of my guns eather.
