Default Dad gave me an old Colt .38...help w/ Date

My dad gave me a family hand down....

Colt .38 Special Police Positive # 197325 are the numbers stamped on it in 2 places. He also gave me boxes of old bullets for this gun too.

I took the gun to the range and it fires perfectly with some Winchester target ammo, I didn't try the old ammo. It's in really nice shape too.

Anyone know how to find out when it was built?

Thanks.

Well the gun works fine...like new. Is this a really rare gun? If so should I not shoot it or can it handle it?

It is a fine gun but not rare. I would shoot it often.

I would stay away from feeding your Colt high velocity +P type ammo- It was made for a lead 158 gr bullet. CAN it shoot +P stuff? Probably- but will greatly accelerate wear, and get "loose" on you. Wadcutter target ammo would be fine, as would some of the Winchester White Box 130 grain.
