Colt Detective Special, 1958

My dad recently passed away and I now have his his old Colt Detective Special, issued to him when he was a NYC Detective. I researched the serial #...710632, and it appears it was issued to him, or he purchased it in 1958...I think he made detective sometime between 1956 and 1958..nickel finish and pretty clean with wood grips..seems I remember white (pearl) grips on the gun when I was a kid but couldn't find them. It shoots fine, just had it on the range this week, much more accurate at 35-45 ft than I expected..I put 4 of 6 shots into the target head and the other two right on the fringes..anybody have any idea what this firearm is worth, not that I would sell it ?? Thanks.. Chuck J.

ROUGHLY $400-$500, depending on the exact condition. Went over to Gunbroker, pulled up completed auctions, no reserves.

Sorry about your Dad. None of my business but, if I were you, I wouldn't sell it. (1) it was your Dad's; and (2) it will never LOSE value.

Truth right there, sounds like your Dad was a good man that did a tough job. I'd keep this close as part of family history.

Truly sorry for your loss.

Thanks guy's. I have no intention of selling it, was just curious as to it's value. He carried that gun in some of the worst precincts in NY back in the day including the 41 (Fort Apache), Harlem and some other past hell holes. It's gonna stay in the family for sure.

Plus it is a Colt and it will only go up in value. Mine is a 1979 and not for sale.

I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your Dad. It's always a tough moment when one loses a parent. I agree with Lon, keep the gun.

Mine is a 1978 colt det. spec. I put a set of pachmayer grips and use it for carry. They are great pistols and a Colt. Keep it. I'm sure your dad would approve. Best regards
