Default Colt Det Special 3 inch barrel

I am about to purchase a Det. Special 38 with a 3 in barrel. I know they are rare with a 3in barrel but don't know how rare. How many did they make? How much is it worth? According to the Ser. # it war built in 1965.Very good condition.
Any info would be appreciated

if it was manufactured in 65 it should have wood grips, anything 66 and later had wrap around woodgrips the 3 inch is scarce as noted.
value depending on condition
100% 850.00 98% 750.00 95% 550.00
90% 300.00 80% 250.00 70% 200.00
60% 185.00 50% 170.00 40% 160.00 30% 150.00 20% 140.00 10% 120.00
add 15% for 3inch barrel and 20% for nickel finish
if nickel finish check to see if it is the original finish a good way to tell is to look at the serial numbering, lettering and other markings and see if they are crisp/clean if they look at all distorted or smugged it is most likely refinished.

Thanks for the info. The gun belongs to a Police officer who is now retired. He bought it new in 1965 and carried it off duty. The gun has pachmyer grips that he put on later for better grip. He does not have the original grips. Id like to find original grips to make it original. I'll bet ya they will be hard to find.

frank,
I hope you will post some pics after you pick it up. I like the Colt snubbies, but have not seen one with a 3" barrel.

Default colt detective special 3 inch barrel

This gun is in beautiful shape. In all my dealings with colts and gun shows I never saw a 3 inch barreled det special. The only gremlin is that the prior owner put on Packmyer grips. He was a big man and needed the extra length. I'd love to show the gun but I am of that generation that never had computrers until I got older. Too put in mildly I an Computer challenged. I have to have one of my sons help me with (what I call technical procedures). So as soon as he shows me how to do it I will put up some photo's.
