I inherited a Colt 45 (model 1840 I think) serial number 205537. What is the date of manufacture and is it advisable to send to Colt to have refurbished? It is in pretty rough shape.

'Fraid you need to be more specific- there is no Model 1840 Colt .45 revolver. Single Action Army? or Model 1878 double action? or New Service?

How does the thing work. rod ejector or swing-out cylinder? Double Action?

Rough shape? Blue worn off, or rusted through?

A trip to your local gunsmith might be the first order of business.
