Carry Revolver for the Wife
My wife is considering buying a revolver to carry in her purse (after she gets her CCDW permit). Any suggestions on good, reasonably priced (under $500) revolver she should check out?

Just a foot note on the LCR..it is a great carry piece and is easy to shoot, just ask my wife. I have several J frame revolvers, in .357 and .38 spl and my wife has shot all of them. She is not fond of the recoil on any of them EXCEPT the Ruger LCR. There is less felt recoil with that gun due to the polymer frame and the tamer grips. She will shoot it all day with no after effects, but after 50 rounds in a smith model 60 or 36, and she wants no more. With the LCR, shooting .357 or .38 spl +P, it does not bother her and will shoot it all day long. Plus it is lighter than the J frame smiths! Just my two pennys here!!

This thread can pretty much already end. 642 and LCR are the only ones to look at for most needs and most people.
342 is lighter for carry, but kicks more because of it
637 has a hammer so one could shoot it in single action, but the hammer could catch on something during draw
640 can fire the .357 round, but is also a little longer and heavier
Anything Taurus is just not at the same quality level.
My wife ended up choosing the 642, but can only shoot a box every couple of months. It is most definitely NOT a plinking gun, but I'm sure you knew that. She loads it with Remington +p lead semi-wadcutters.

Charter Arms Undercover .38 Spl. Lightweight,+P rated, not too expensive. For what it's worth, they also make a model called "Pink Lady", with some kinda pink dye or paint? imbedded in the metal.

In the past I have purchased 2 Taurus Model 85 38 Special. Cal. snub pistols for my family as gifts. Both are ladies and really like and shoot the pistols well. The good thing about the 38s are that you can shoot low recoil target loads in them for the ladies to practice with and then defense loads to carry. today there are some fantastic defense loads. And the ammunition does not cost you an arm and a leg.
Not to mention the warranty is good on them and they are very durable.

Start with the Ruger LCR. Also check out the compact S&W's and Ruger SP101. I don't think I'd even bother with anything that wasn't from one of those two makers, although Charter might be worth a look.
I have an SP101. It's probably the most durable and best looking revolver in this class, but it's also the heaviest.

Thx everyone for the info. We went to our local gun shop and she looked at the LCR and the S&W bodyguard. She liked how the LCR felt, but wasn't crazy about the way the S&W felt to her. I think she is leaning toward the LCR.
