Default Bear Load

I got to thinking after reading another post about the .38 on four legged critters. What would be your preferred .357 load in bear country? I know,a .44mag.. But, this is a suppose you only had a .357. What would you stoke it with?

You want penetration with bear loads. I'd recommend a hardcast SWC of at least 158 gr and preferably heavier in a "fullhouse" load.

I was kinda thinking along the same lines. Only a Jacketed soft point in 158,or is that close to the same thing?

It's not quite the same. A JSP will still expand and upset to some degree whereas a hard cast SWC won't. You'll get more reliable penetration with the SWC.

I want the heaviest bullet going as fast as I can safely push it. Who cares about leading the barrel if your bear poop your not going to be worried about it anyways.

Biggest, heaviest, hardest thing I can push out of the barrel. Buffalo Bore makes some .357s that make my 185 gr handloads look like midrange wadcutters.

Or, just take a Ruger Mk III and a friend. In the event of a bear attack, draw the Ruger, and kneecap your friend.

I wish you luck in reducing their evil numbers. Are you sure you wouldn't like to add some challenge to your hiking by carrying a nice 12 guage pump with some slugs?
