Anyone have a Ruger Blackhawk .41 mag

I acquired one today for some money owed me. I checked the serial number at Ruger and found it was made in 1982. It's been used or carried enough to wear a lot of the bluing off of it and there were a couple of rust spots that someone tried to sand out. Other than that it's tight and nice. Heavy (they weigh 38 oz). It came with a nice western belt and holster with loop to secure i in the holster and tie down thongs. It has a lot of loops for ammo.

Since I haven't shot it yet, I am looking for some experienced owners to get your opinions. Thanks for the input.

Dave :)

I had one back in the eighties, sweet gun I really like the 41mag and even carried a S&W revolver in41 mag as a duty gun for a couple of years. Since the Blackhawk was a just for fun gun I ended up trading it to a friend that wanted it as a back up for hog hunting and got his 357 so I could shoot the much CHEAPER 38 spl at the range. Both worked equally well on paper and cans but the 41 will break you if you don't reload.

I've got one and it's my favorite long range handgun. I've had it for more than 20 years and it's never seen a factory round. I've shot a lot of critters with it. It is far more accurate than my 44 mag. Recoil is about the same as the 44.

rjd3282 - Since you reload, do you load hot or medium? What weight bullets do you use and what powder and grains of powder. I'm hoping I can make it a fun, accurate gun without being a wrist breaker. Thanks.

I really like the 200 grain jhp I have a load with H110 that breaks 1600 fps out of my 7.5 inch barrel. I've taken white tail with this load. Unfortunately I can't tell the grains off the top of my head. I'm about 5000 miles away from my books but I got the load from the lyman manual. I do load some 215 grain cast swc with unique that prove to be some what more comfortable to plink with. I have also hunted ground hogs with some 170 gr. jhp's and they are 1800 fps. They will completely remove a groundhogs head. :D

Have a Ruger Redhawk in .41mag. Nice shooter, accurate, recoil's not as severe as my .44mag. You made reference to loading your own. Good idea, .41mag's not cheap.

I bought a 1968 Old Model, 4 5/8 barrel. When shooting with the orig. grips, the trigger guard about gnawed off my trigger finger at the first knuckle. Switched to wider grips, no more problems. Very accurate, my hands-down favorite. For ammo, I depend on either Georgia Arms or North Georgia Reloading. They make some very dependable AND reasonable ammo that I stock up on when I hit the Gun Shows. Mostly 210 gr.

i had a Blackhawk in .41 Magnum years ago. I reloaded for it but had trouble getting bullets of desired design. But it wouldn't do anything my .44s wouldn't, so sold it off.
