Intentionally trying to pick a fight and cause disagreement. Gun haters and left-wing liberals love to troll gun forums to try to get folks to say things that they can take out of context and make us look like uncivilized barbarian thugs. The troll idea crossed my mind as well BTW...

Throwing out comments just to incite arguments.

Sensitive. Me? I have no emotional stake in this discussion. I was simply rendering an opinion on what was said, based on my own opinion and experience. I claim no expert status on self defense or firearms in general. But, I'm not a complete ignoramus either. If my response seemed "sensitive," it was due to my inability to express myself clearly, not through any intent.

I suspected a possible troll as well, but I wasn't sure. When in doubt, I press forward by taking it all at face value until it's undeniable.

Default Well,

Well, lets just agree to disagree on this subject, and be respectful to each
other and move on.

There is more to the amount of flash/bang/recoil than just caliber; the most annoying pistol i have ever shot, flash/bang/recoil-wise, was a .38 special. It had a very short, snub barrel; it kicked more, flashed a lil bit more, and definately BANGed more than my .357mag with the 6 inch barrel.

Just saying, look for something longer than a snub-nose on anything you might have to shoot in the house or dark or without ear plugs. There are police trade-in revolvers in .38 at some online stores, perhaps that would fill the need?

I love the look of that lil snubbie, but i don't like shooting it, even with ear plugs, outside, in daylight.

OK. Group hug, check.
Moving on...

I don't know your budget. Good revolvers aren't cheap.
.22 revolvers:
Hit the S&W web sight and look at K & L frame revolvers. My personal favorite is the model 17 Masterpiece. Truth be told, I'm not entirely sure that it's "the Best." I like them based on the fact that my Dad had 2 K-22s when I was a kid, and I really have fond memories of them. It's still on the short list so far.

.38/.357 revolvers:
Ruger GP 100, If I was to grab another .357, It would be on the list of candidates.
Hit the S&W web sight and look at K & L frame revolvers. .

Also be on the lookout for used Colt Pythons (.357) or Diamondbacks (.38 & .22), if your tastes run that way.
Dan Wessons are worth a look if you come across any nice ones. Less elegant than S&W or Colt, but built like tanks and extremely accurate.

Can I play?

It doesn't matter what handgun, or shotty you choose, for that matter, they are all gonna be loud if fired off in an enclosured structure like a home. But, as mentioned by ScottA up there in an earlier post, adrenalin is gonna cover up most of the sound, whether you encounter 1 armed/unarmed person or 5.

I take it you have never been in combat or in a real life situation where your life and/or family are in danger or threat. Your hearing will be fine, your "fight or flight" or "acute stress response" of your bodies sympathetic nervous system will overcompensate for your hearing. All you will be able to hear is your own loud racing heartbeat in your ears.

Just my nickel's worth of opinion...keep the change.
