I picked up a pristine 686-4 about 3 weeks ago (and an even more pristine 686-3 two days later). I can only give you a window based on the chronology in the fantastic Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson: The -4 started in 1993 and was supplanted by the -5 in 1997.
