Default 5 shot .38 spl vs. 8 shot .22 mag

i think with the new .22 mag ammo its just more practical. for self defense why not?

Maybe as a bug or deep conceal, id stick with something more powerful as a primary.

My youngest kid (15) has a Colt Umarex M4 .22 tactical and I've told him if necessary he can use the 30-round mag for home defense...Just keep pulling the trigger and eventually the BG will go down. But for concealed carry? I'd want something with immediate stopping power. Remember, if you have to shoot somebody 8 times to terminate a threat it's not going to go well for you in court. Better to shoot once or twice and be done with it. 22 Mag is a good round but you better hit him in a vital spot the first time or you will just p*ss him off.

I was highly disappointed in the numbers. The Winchester did better and it was not tailored for short barrels. A 22lr 40 grain mini mag will do that well at 973 fps in a 2.25" revolver. The Win would give you 55fps boost for 4x the money per round.
Note: A 2.25" revolver in 22lr is close to a 3.5"-4" semi in velocity. Carry 40 grain solids if you carry a 22lr. Hollow points wont open up at the low velocities from short barrels.

What 7point62 said. The .22mag is a good varmint round, but self defense? Unless you hit a vital organ, like the heart or brain, Mr. Bad Guy will hurt you badly while he bleeds out.

Why not?
Can't belive you're comparing a 22mag with a 38 for self defense

I have a NAA 22 mag that I carry in my gym shorts when I go to the gym. I cant see carrying it anytime that I could carry something bigger. When there is no other option 22 mag is better than nothing. But I will not limit myself when there are so many better options right in my gun safe.

In my other life (as a single individual), I was always told that bigger is better.

So I added 150lbs to my frame.

There is something to be said about the number of rounds a gun can hold. Admittingly, the chance of a "shootout" is rare. If you've never been paintballing or airsoft shooting try it and you'll see what I mean. It's harder to hit a moving target that shoots back.
I would still personally prefer the .38 for a carry gun, because of reliability and power, especially in +p
