I have (finally) found the holster for my Alaskan...Galco makes a pancake that suits me to a T. I wear it at about 10 O'clock crossdraw. It's tight to the body and even with stock grips the pistol is hard to detect under a light over-garment.

Default I carried a four inch M29

For a number of years. It was a 29-2 as I recall and I wore it in a Baker Pancake holster. For defensive ammo, I carried 240 grain SWCL bullets with a substantial dose of Unique in .44 Magnum cases.

It was comfortable, convenient, and disposed enough power to shorten discussions radically. Just for the record, in those days I was 5'6" and went about 150 pounds or so. A normal jacket covered it.

Not if your talking woods gun. . . then it could be under kill.

I carry a .44 mag most of the time while in bear country, but I usually have a 12 gauge with slugs and 00/000 Buck alternated (9+1) not far from me. I have a backpack set up for the 12 gauge to ride on the side when hiking, but the .44 mag always comes out first.

If I could have, "what ever" in bear/bigfoot country. A 5'' .500 S&W on my hip, and a 45-70 guide gun would give me a great view on the food chain.

Default overkill?

I shoot mostly 44 spcls in my Anaconda and a 357 is my favorite carry piece. But I would not say that 44 mag is overkill or uselss etc. It all depends on the person and his skills. As for muzzle flash my 357-4 in a dark room or my 38 snubnosed S&W are going to be nearly as bad. Not every attack happens in a dark alley (unless thats where you habitate). Out of the 1000s of us who carry concealed I wonder what the percentage is that have actually had to draw down on someone? If drawing a 44 mag is not enough to change a perps mind you're probably in trou ble anyway LOL. Maybe 44 mag is not a good choice for a first pistol because you may pick up a bad flinch. I just think its easy to offer opinioins based on predjudice not actual experience.

Has anyone here had any experience firing one with such a short barrel. I understand they can be rather brutal in the recoil department, and the muzzle blast is nothing short of a nuke going off in your face. Any truth to this?
PM on the way.

I see you probably dont go heavy because of the H&K name...
I dont like the thoughts of 1 gun failing or a friend being unarmed.
