Read the links to your grandpa; he will understand. They explain that .44 special is the cartridge that .44 magnum was developed from. .44 special is basically a little shorter with a little less powder than a .44 mag, making it more comfortable for smaller or less experienced shooters.
.38 special and .357 magnum are related in the same way; i own a Ruger GP100 revolver that will chamber .38 special or .357 magnum rounds. I use .38 special for target practice, since it is softer shooting and a little less expensive.
Perhaps they should have made the names less confusing.
