Default 357magnum revolver vs ?? caliber pistol ?

What can you compare a 357 magnum revolver with against what caliber in a pistol ? Or is it superior/greater to a 45acp?

Depends............ up close-in-your-face I'd choose a .357 Magnum loaded with a good 158 gr. lead SWCHP. On the street, tossup betwixt the .45 ACP and the .357. I'd pick the .45 ACP with a flat nosed or holloow point bullet.

My own druthers is a .44 Special with 240 gr. JHPs.

Superior to a 45acp By far better. Only a 10mm is in the same ability and it is so close it will cause arguments. Factory run of the mill ammo you can find in your average store the 357 is a better round but when underwood ammo, BB and DT are in the mix they are very close or the 10mm steps ahead as the best 357loads will be hand loaded. You do have a better choice of handguns with the 357 and longer barrels aid even higher velocities. One of my old hog loads was a 180gr hardcaste at 1450fps from a 8" barrel. There are handguns that load should not be fired in. The 357 does have slightly better ballistics too but they really are two close rounds. Probably depends much more on your needs and handgun size .

Also with the 357 you can practice with or self defence with 38 special plus p ammo.
But its been pretty hard to find 38 bullets around here and when you do they are about the same price as the 357 rounds

The .357 Mag. loaded with 125 grs. HP is a serious combat weapon. I really doubt that for most civilian human encounters a long barreled magnum hand gun would be required.
The CC weapon is for personal protection. Police weapons are used as offenseive and defensive weapons. I think too many people confuse their persoanl rights to carry with police powers. Wrong.

Someone one here made a statement in another thread -- it may have been Jon -- to the effect that while the .357 might not take first place in all categories, it pretty much took second place in everything. The point being that I think a .357 magnum revolver with a four to six inch barrel is the most useful all around handgun there is, especially considering with wide range of ammunition that it can shoot.

Everyone should have a .357 anchoring their collection.

Apples and Oranges.....

Myself I believe that every gun owner needs to have a .38/.357 mag revolver in their stable.

Superior how?
Stopping power? Capacity? Noise level? Muzzle flash? Penetration?

Intended use?
Concealed carry? Nightstand? Target use? Hunting? Boat anchor?

Liberals are constantly telling us about the poor and oppressed in this country. With that in mind, why do they feel the need to keep importing poor people from other countries?

I could compare it to all calibers. They may not look remotely equal. But what is the task that any selected round is being asked to do?

For fun and economic practice and marksmanship building, as well as matches, a .22 is probably king.

For combat, something thta is reliable, easy to reload, and get follow up shots may be superior. (All handguns actually suck in this role, and a rifle is better.)

For practical shooting matches, something that makes the power requirements, but doesn't have excessive recoil may be prefered.

For hunting, it may depend on the game. A .22 is still better for small stuff, where you want to preserve meat or hides, while a large bore Magnum may be prefered for dangerous animals, or animals with thick bones that need a heavy bullet to guarantee adequate penetration. Think .44 as being a minimum.
