I have a 6-shot, large frame, Taurus's .357. It has no model number, but when I enter the s/n into Taurus database, it says built in 1992. Can't find any parts manuals that even look similar (vent rib, combat trigger+hammer, fully adjustable sights). I took it out for the annual cleaning and the cylinder won't open. The thumb release is clearly working and the rear of the cylinder begins to roll out, but the front at the end of the extractor rod doesn't budge. The extractor rod fits up into a grove below the barrel and there's no way to get anything on it. When the cylinder is spun freely, the extractor rod rotates with it. There appears to be a pin in front of the rod. Is there like a spring loaded ball bearing that snaps into the rod when closed? I let some CLP soak in overnite, still bound up in front. It's unloaded BTW. Thanx in advance for any suggestions.
Guessing that the ejector rod has become un-screwed a bit. Probably left hand
thread. Most recent Smith and Wessons are, and the Taurus is a S&W copy in
many ways. See if you can hold the knurled part and turn the cylinder. If you cock
the hammer a bit you should find a point where the hand and cylinder stop are both
disengaged and you can turn the cylinder, tighten the rod and get it to swing out.
At that point disassemble the rod, clean the threads, and apply a TINY drop of
BillM, I owe you a beer.......several of them. I suspected something like that but didn't know about the left handed threads. About 2 turns on the cylinder and it fell out. I'll clean it up real good and put a dab of loctite of it. Must have been settin there all year just waiting to mess with me. Clean it every year and it's been in the safe untouched. Couldn't figure out how it broke just sitting there. Gotta love these message boards. There's always someone out there who knows more and willing to help. Thanx much guys!!!
...while scrounging around lately for used guns, I have ran across a revolver that the rod was loose. Actually, it is the S&W that I've got the three day wait on right now. I screwed it in once, so I thought, and turned it right handed. Never went to it's stop, just quit fiddling with it. So, I'm to assume that it needs disassembled, cleaned and degreased, the the blue Loctite, eh?
