Ya, love to have one of those, I have heard that they have functionality issues but don't know this to be fact. It's great to see the loyalty oozing out of these threads. |

Just when everyone was grining you had to throw a fat, ugly, Italian gun in the mix. We all know how those Italian's know there guns, they will either drop them and run or hand them over when asked for them. __________________ Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not." ~ Thomas Jefferson

The Mateba you can really define the "Formula 1" of the revolver. ... I'll never have enough money to be able to buy. Will always be my dream come true. I am satisfied with my GP 100. In life, one must also know how to please! or not? |

I'll second anyone whom mentions the Ruger GP-100.
I had a 6" Half Shroud for awhile before things got tight, and loved it. |

Majority votes so far look to be for the GP100. Now, what is the all around best barrel length?
I'll stick with my Dan Wesson for now, I have shot the GP100 and they are fine weapons in my opinion too. I don't have to be concerned about barrel length as one who is about to purchase a GP100.
With the Dan Wesson;
I use the 2.5" for advantage for carry and the sensation of lighting up full mag rounds.
The 4" is close to the 2.5" for carry, but not quite as easy, accuracy for me "may" be a little better along with being a bit better on the web of my hand with those hot loads.
The 6", I hardly use, it is not as good as the 8" for those 50 to 100 yard shooting sessions and I only use a shoulder holster for longer that the 4", why not just put on the 8?
The 8" HV or V, works great with my scope or without for dead nuts accuracy.
So, if one is out to look for a new, or new to me, GP100, what barrel length does one go with? Or, maybe this question, which length is the most popular? |

I just bought the GP100 after looking at many .357 Mags. Not sure how folks say the S&W is a smoother trigger pull as I tried both side by side along with the Taurus and IMHO the Ruger won out.
Again, as said earlier it gets down to personal preference which includes, grip, weight, balance, trigger pull and length of barrel. It didn't matter to me if the gun was more expensive, purchased by thousands, worshiped by many or that some hot shot won a shooting tournament with the gun.
I don't shoot tournaments nor plan to so that variable is a non-issue. I just wanted an all around powerful gun that I could carry with me when camping and hiking that would be accurate, reliable, durable and go "bang" when I pulled the trigger in an emergency. Hopefully all that my gun will ever see is a paper target, but nice to know I have some good insurance if that dreadful day ever comes. |

Here's my "dated" 2 cents worth. Back in the mid 70's I owned a Ruger Security Six 6". Someone I knew had a Colt Python, which by the way are a beautiful handgun, like fine art. But, here is the unusual thing I found out about them due to the owner wanting me to do some handloads for him. At the time I had a bullet mould for Keith type 158 grain bullets. I loaded some for him crimping the case mouth into the bullet groove designed for the crimp and a few days later he showed me why they wouldn't work in his Python, the loads were too long, the bullets stuck out at least 1/8th" beyond the front of the cylinder. In the Ruger the same round was at least 1/16" below the front of the cylinder even after a potential recoil bullet pull of five rounds fired. I presenly own a Ruger .22 pistol and a 44 Redhawk, both stainless steel both flawless in operation. The Mark II 6" has killed many digger squirels up to 100 yards, when we lived in Colorado we had a blued Mark II that I used to shoot grouse during deer season, most frequently neck shots. The Redhawk I bought here in Oregon many years ago, it has put more venison in the freezer than any of my rifles. If I wanted a new .357 revolver I would buy a GP 100. Over the years of owning Rugers I have come to trust their quality and yes they are bulilt like tanks and that's a good thing. |

A S&W that is adequate for carry (a 686 plus 4" weighs 39 ounces which is more than the GP100 and 101.) For over 25 years my daily carry gun was a custom Colt 1911 Series 70 govt. .45 on duty and off. My present carry gun is a Para 7-45 LDA in a Bianchi X15. I recently bought a used (like new) S&W 686 Plus-4 4"barrel for $450. Had a custom gunsmith install XS Big Dot sights, do a trigger job and radius the cylinder ports for speed loaders. A set of Crimson Trace Hoghunter laser grips will be added later. Its my carry gun when I'm walking the roads and trails around my neighborhood. Its also carried in a X15 holster and loaded with jacketed soft point hunting bullets. I've had bears approach withing 8 feet, but never aggressively. I feel better carrying the .357 over the .45 ACP if a bear decides he might like to have me for lunch. Last edited by Grayowl; 12-04-2009 at 04:36 AM. |

Good lord! Send me in the direction of the gun store you fund that Smith at! I can't find anything like that even in the $500 range here. That's interesting that you changed the sights, the last Smith I shot I felt the sights were more than adequate and actually preferred them to the 3 dot. I also couldn't even imagine wanting a smoother trigger. |
