There is one revolver out there that will fire many calibers. It's a very high quality firearms. It's a full frame and allows for over 2 dozen different chamberings. If I'm not mistaken, it's made from a special metal and is super strong to allow forcing over sized rounds through the bore.... Unlikely that your father has one of these though.

Charter Arms tried a rimless revolver, in both 9mm and 40 cal. Must not have gone over well, cause last time I checked. it was discontinued.

The Ruger SP101 is what many people turn to if they can't afford (or dont want to save up for) a Ruger GP100.

I've got one and have carried it many miles. I've shot a fair amount of .357 mag through it too. I bought mine used for something like $250, been a while and I don't remember the exact number now. I wish I could find a similar deal on one with a 3" barrel. Good luck wearing one out, they're built like tanks.

Among the things it is not--a pocket gun. It's way too heavy to carry in a pocket in my opinion. I'd want something around half the weight for that, but such a gun would be unpleasant to shoot with magnums, so I don't have one. Mine rides in an OWB belt holster.
