357 revolver in multiple cal
My dad was lookin at a revolver one of his buddy's has for sale and said it was an old one and that it was a 357 but will shoot a different round other than the 357. He said the guy said that it is cheaper to shoot rather than the 358 round. If anyone has any info on this it would be much appreciated because I know very little about revolvers and there rounds. Thanks

He said the thought it was a triple digit #cal, like 380 or so

nope it's 38 special. unless he's got two cylinders for it. Even then the barrel wouldn't be correct for anything else.

Yep- ALL 357 Magnum revolvers will also fire .38 Special- and also .38 Long Colt, and .38 Short Colt (last two are kinda scarce) They are all the same diameter, but different lengths and power.

All of those ".38s" are really shooting bullets that measure .357 in diameter. Confusion has to do with the change over from a bullet that was the same size as the case (like a .22 LR) to later cartridges that the bullet fitted INSIDE the catridge case.

The .38 Special ammo is less $$$, and less recoil/ blast.

But too many specials can cause harm to it but its alot of round I believe. It will start with the relief at the front of the chamber you will notice build up of residue.

If you shoot a lot of .38 Special, you may get enuff crud in the cylinder to make loading .357 Mag difficult. Clean the cylinder.

Vaguely recall something about being able to fire the .351 Winchester Self Loading rifle round from a .357- but not sure, and THOSE are scarce rounds.

You can use .380 auto. with moon clips in a .357 mag...................even 9mm.

But they are the same caliber, just different cartridge.

Unless it is a Medusa. Medusas will shoot any 9mm/.38/357 round
