Here's a Gunbroker listing for a BLUED Python, quite a bit more than $500-800. The nickel finish usually commands a little more.

But, like the man said, condition is everything. There's a very wide gap between "above average" and "not quite mint."

I was offered $1,200 for this one. Not nickel, and a little holster-worn but no nicks and better grips for a shooter. (mine is not for sale)
Nickel might be a little more.

Unless it's a turd parts gun or has been abused or worn out almost any Python in reasonable condition will bring over $1,000 nowadays.
