Default 1895 Colt "Thunderer"

Grandfather just passed this down to me and I was wondering if anyone has seen them or know anything about them. I know it's the same gun Billt the Kid had when he was supposedly shot and killed.

Not much to know. I've worked on a large number as they are prone to be non-functional. Often seen where they either work single-action or work double-action but not both. Not a real bad design but most have seen alot of use and have become quite worn, hence the functioning problems.

There were 3 different calibers made in this gun- the 41 Colt "Thunderer", 38 Colt "Lightning", and an earlier 32 Colt "Rainmaker". They were made 1877 to 1909, total all 3 calibers 166,849 guns. This was Colt's first double action, and unfortunately had a rep for unreliability (delicate action, parts broke a lot).

The original poster said he has a 1895 Colt not an 1877. The reports I read had Bonney using an 1877 (or an 1873) not a 1878(sorry chewchew). The 1877 in .41 Long Colt was called the Thunderer(like C3 says). We can be pretty sure Billy the kid did not use the 1895 Colt as he died in 1881.
