Radium is a naturally occurring radioactive element. The Hill Country is "rich" in radium. Drill stem pipe (popular for ranch fencing) is almost always radioactive. It has to be left out in the open for years to let the radiation levels subside before it can be used . Not uncommon to see fields with thousands of feet of drill stem laying out in the open.

Good old lead pipe prevented the radiation from getting to the water, but the lead leached into the drinking water. Damned of you do....

Mostly tho, the pipe is left out in the fields because of the radiation as you said.

Otherwise much of this pipe would have been recycled.

The worst part of these reports is discovering that Our goverment chose not to inform their citizens about the hazards of drinking radioactive water: Much higher levels of thyroid cancers, leukemias, stomache cancers...

Oh, I agree, if the TCEQ was withholding information about the hazards to the people, they should be held accountable.
