I think it is because we are dealing with people and people follow fads. Any of those calibers would be fine.

Police departments seldom if ever base issue pistol choice off of effectiveness or any realistic criterea other than how much it costs and what the chief or mayor reads in their union news letter.

If it WAS based off research into what works best police across the nation would be armed with 357magnum handguns and have ar15 and 12ga shotguns in every squad car...

There are a lot more things going on than how effective a handgun cartridge is or what its recoil is. Mostly cost factors.

For example if a certain vendor is trying to getmarket share they will often pick a huge pd and regardless of how good or bad their product is they sell it way below what it costs to make.

Do that a few times and all of a sudden a third rate handgun (cough glock cough) is being talked about and purchased by everyone thinking they are great cuz police are using it. When in reality the only reason its being used is because the company practically gave them away.

The last thing you should ever do is base your personal gun selection off of what a chief of police or mayor or other elected politician chooses....
"Gun control: The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her panty hose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound." L. Neil Smith

The problem with being stupid is you cannot simply decide to stop doing dumb things...

I have a Stoeger 8040 Cougar, .40S&W. Of the more than 2 dozen guns I have, it is among the most accurate and reliable defensive guns. It is the most accurate semiauto. I have some that cost more than double the price of the Cougar but don't shoot as well. I carry it whenever the temperature here in South Carolina is cool enough that I can wear a jacket.

The choice of equipment used is not always about what works best; it is often about what is cheapest.

between JonM and BlueTurf, i think they have stated pretty much what i was thinking. most large PD's are usually going to go the route that will give them the best bang for their buck, (pun intended!). they probably have someone that also supplies ammo at a discount cost too.

OP stinks of a troll. Fires one shot and backs off to watch the fireworks. First post. Only post. We are done here.
