why are all police departments going to 40 cal.?????

Its crap! 9mm and 45 are more reliable more accurate and have less recoil .... your thoughts

Im not sure why that is, but good question.

Reliable? How is the 40 S&W not reliable? Works just fine in my Cougar and the recoil is comparable to my M9.

Now may I ask what you base your conclusions on?

Because the 9mm is a small projectile at a high velocity and (The Great) 45 acp has too much recoil and is harder to train smaller and female officers. In my opinion The 40 s recoil is pretty close to 45 ? Many officers were shooting suspects and they kept coming also over penetration. Today's ammo is much better though.Nothing to do w/ reliable Just stopping power, over penetration, cost & ease of training (majority of officers shoot as little as posable)

I can’t answer the “why part” but, it doesn’t seem to be over penetration of the 9mm although most LEO’s I know that do carry a service 9mm due to department requirements do have Talons loaded.

I’m pretty sure though, it may have something to do with a good sales package

i have to disagree with your reasoning. the 45acp doesn't have too much recoil and the felt recoil is less than the 40 S&W round. my wife is 5' 4" weighs about 135 lbs. and has not a bit of problem shooting either of my 45's or the 40 S&W or the 9mm pistols. my father has been shooting pistols for over 50 years and doesn't like shooting my 45's at all. he's 6' 1" weighs about 195 and uses either his 9mm S&W for CCW or his DW 357 magnum for target shooting.

i am not for sure what ammo costs are where you live, but around here 40 S&W ammo is about 60% higher in cost than 9mm, and about 40% higher in cost than 45acp.

9mm is better???

The 40 Smith is a great compromise between 9mm and 45 ACP.

Maybe one reason for the .40's is that they generally have a higher magazine capacity than most .45's. Many police officers are not all that much into shooting, and feel better with a 15+1 .40 than with a 8+1 .45. They can miss or get ineffective hits with a .40 and still have some shots left to keep trying. Not intended to be funny. My brother was a cop for 20 years, showed me his piece one time, and literally had to blow the dust off of it before he handed it to me.

I love the .40 and my SIG handles it fine, shoots like a Cadillac. Plus it holds 14+1....more's better :)

IMO, i like the 40 S&W caliber, because i do think it's a good compromise between the 9mm and the 45acp. more MV than the 45, little bigger than the 9mm, little more capacity in similar sized pistol than the 45, heavier bullet weights than the 9mm. some may disagree, and that's okay. i also have a 9mm, a 380, a 44 mag., and two 45acp's. i have not a real clue and reason as to why police departments are going to 40 cal. could be some type of budgeting and what price they get the pistols and ammo for. the town i live in has a small police force and many of them carry a wide variety of calibers. but large cities may buy a few hundred at a time and cases and cases of ammo at a time. maybe some of the LEO members will chime in and enlighten us to the reasons why.
