For me the best method was degreasing the stamping with alcohol (higher % is better). Once it dries, fill stamping with the nail polish and let it start to thicken. Before it completely dry, wipe away as much excess as possible with a clean finger. I found that if you wipe at an angle (45 degree is best) you are less likely to wipe out the fill inside the stamping. Once the remaining smudges are dry, carefully wipe them away with ACETONE FREE nail polish remover. (Note that acetone can seriously damage the finish on your gun.) I usually finish up by gently wiping across the whole stamping with a paper towel dampened with the polish remover--don't press very hard or you risk removing the color from the stamping. For best coverage, repeat the polish application and clean up three times (not including the alcohol).
After the nail polish from the last clean up dries, the finish on the slide will be dull due to dryness. Wiping down the area with a lightly oiled cleaning patch will restore the finish.
