S&w, sig saur, and ruger all make great guns. Just handle as many as you can. Shoot as many as possible. Find the one that suits your purpose best.

Any of the major manufacturers will produce guns that will shoot fine and you can give to your great-grandchildren some day. Most of selecting a handgun is how it feels to you.

My .40 is a Springfield XDm. But I would have no problem recommending to check out Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Sig Sauer, Beretta, a dozen others and yes even Glock (ugh).

Find a range and rent as many handguns as you can. If you are not familiar with handguns, take a class. Here is a link that can help you find a class in your area.

I have a Ruger SR 9 and have shot a glock 23. I like the feel of the glock. I will try to rent other guns.

The Bersa .40 was my first semi-auto & didn't need a "break-in". I haven't visited with a lot of Bersa .40 owners, as most seem to prefer the 9mm or .45ACP, but I don't hear about complaints with the .40 other than i'ts "snappy" recoil, compared to the .45ACP.

Mine is the Firestorm Mini. They no longer import the Firestorm rollmark except in .22 & .380. The Thunder Ultra Compact (UC) is the same pistol with cosmetic differences. The new "Pro" Thunders have polygonal rifling, loaded chamber indicator & accessory rail. They also offer it in the high capacity (HC) with 13+1 capacity, which may be my next Bersa.

I just picked up a Ruger SR40c two weeks ago and love it. It fits my hand very well, shoots where I aim it, and eats everything that I feed it so far. Thanks for allowing me to brag.

If not the Glock as you stated I would seriously look into the Sigs! Maybe followed by the Springfield XD series.

I have a Glock and a SIG-Saur P226. Both are excellent. I guess I prefer the SIG-Saur P226 because it's identical to the 9MM SIG P226 that I carry every day.

But actually, you can't go wrong with Glock, SIG, HK, Walther, S&W or Ruger.

The ergomonics of the Ruger would make it my last choice, but it's strong, safe, reliable, accurate and inexpensive.

i personally endorse the SA XDm40 because i have one and it shoots very well and fits my hand good. i almost bought the glock as i have shot them before and i do like them, but i like the XDm better. as much as i like my XDm, i would suggest try the XDm as a choice when looking for one that works for you and check out as many as possible. if you have a chance to test fire them, try out them out as every handgun will handle recoil differently. find what fits you and you will most likely enjoy it. good luck.
