Default What are good ammunition manufacturers?

I just bought a Sig p226 in 9mm for my first handgun, which I plan on using it at the range, so I am wondering what are good manufactures for ammo.

I am asking this because when ever I have to buy ammo for any gun, I have no idea what manufacturers are good and what ones should be avoided at all costs. So to simplify me question just list out, which manufactures make low quality ammo, which ones for medium quality ammo, and which ones for high quality ammo?

You can buy cheap ammo and it may perform better then expensive.. or vise versa. From my personal experience in different pistols, the weapon itself will choose what it likes to shoot better than others. Sure there is ammunition made with much better quality, that doesn't necessarily mean your particular pistol will eat it. I.E: My Kimber will fire Remington UMC all day.. My Taurus will have a FTF/FTE 5 in 50 rounds fired.

For the range: Hit Walmart or somewhere similar and buy any cheap brass-cased FMJ. Should be $10-12/box.
*Blazer Brass, Fed Champion/American Eagle, Win White Box, Rem UMC, Speer Lawman, etc

Defense: Take your pick from various JHPs. I like how Winchester Ranger 127gr +p+ handles in a P226.

Go Here for great prices.
$10-12 for various 115gr 9mm FMJ (UMC nickel, Am Eagle, Lawman)
$18-27 for Winchester Ranger JHPs in various weights.

thanks, I just need to get a good idea of what ammo to buy, because you hear these stories and you see the pictures of people who bought cheep ammo and it ended up destroying their guns.

I've put about 2000 rounds thru my 9mm P226 and have had 1 FTE and 1 FTF. The P226 will handle about anything you feed it. I mostly shoot Speer Lawman 124gr and RWS 124gr. Also 115gr Magtech, Fiocchi, Sellier & Bellot and USAammo (for plinking). For self-defense I use Federal HST 124gr +P.

I purchase all my target ammo in 1000 round cases online. My target price is $200 delivered. The last 6 purchases (this year) have ranged from $179 to $235 with an average of $211. My favorite target ammo round is RWS 124gr (at WeaponsWorld.com). I buy most of my target ammo from SGAmmo.com. For self-defense, I buy Federal HST from Kylesgunshop.com.

Although it did not destroy the handgun, I've seen Monarch steel cases cause a few FTE's with a Walther P99.

The shellac in the warm barrel caused the casings to stick in the chamber after shots fired.

I use PMC and American Eagle, haven't had any real issues with them.

For just range shooting Win White Box works. Now for carry the Ammo. you depend on to save your hide if needed. Hornady Corbon Black Hill's all great choice's.

I'd be cautious of hand loads. Not saying they're bad, just be cautious of them.
