Best idk but hottest you should check out buffalo bore those seem to be a pretty hot round.

But to be honest any quality self defence round is hotter than any plinking ammo.

I have heard a lot of reports that "Double Tap" ammo has a good bit of umph behind it. I think Fiochi offers a load in their Extrema line that features the Hornday XTP bullet. It is not a hot load so to speak but the XTP seems to have a very good rep. Cabelas had that particular load for a really great price not too long ago.

Well i use hydra shok only because ive had the unpleasent exerience of catching one in the stomach and some how living through it but yeah hydra shoks hurt like hell trust me if i wasnt as big as i was i would be dead thats for sure and it was the 40 S&W type

I enjoy the Speer +p rounds in my .38. in the .45's hydroshok's it seems to like. As far as hotter I am not really sure, the best round depends on the firearm and yourself. My 9MM will not cycle Hydro's and dont really like the Speer ammo, but gets good groups with Remington. Try a few at the range and test them with a crono and see what ones perform the best.

Buffalo Bore lists their 40SW stuff as this:
