For home defense, there is absolutely no reason not to go big. You might as well go for as big as your heart desires. My beside gun is a XDm 4.5" 45acp. I chose 45acp because my research showed that the boom of the subsonic 45acp might be slightly less damaging to the ears than the crack of the supersonic 9mm.
This sounds good to me. I keep either my Glock31 out, which has a TLR-1 for obvious reasons or my M&P 357Sig, which is my EDC . To me, no matter how much you shoot, in a high stress situation your first couple of rounds has a high probability of missing so mag capacity comes into play when I choose what to leave out . The XMD45 has plenty of knockdown and plenty of rounds if you miss. I don't personally care for a shotgun since you have to account for everything that comes out of the end of the barrel (legally).
