I use a Mossberg 500 Persuader 12 ga 8 shot with a pistol grip or a Ithaca 37 police for HD. The name of the game is to stop the threat with a minimum of collateral damage.

House gun- forget the compact handguns. Buy a shotgun for home.

Forget the pistol gripped shot guns. You can miss with those things at short distance as easly as hip shooting a handgun.

For recoil sensitive get the mossy 20ga super bantam with adjustable stock lenght so it can be shouldered by kids or small ladys or tucked under the arm atleast for a more controlled shot.

For home defense, there is absolutely no reason not to go big. You might as well go for as big as your heart desires. My beside gun is a XDm 4.5" 45acp. I chose 45acp because my research showed that the boom of the subsonic 45acp might be slightly less damaging to the ears than the crack of the supersonic 9mm.
This sounds good to me. I keep either my Glock31 out, which has a TLR-1 for obvious reasons or my M&P 357Sig, which is my EDC . To me, no matter how much you shoot, in a high stress situation your first couple of rounds has a high probability of missing so mag capacity comes into play when I choose what to leave out . The XMD45 has plenty of knockdown and plenty of rounds if you miss. I don't personally care for a shotgun since you have to account for everything that comes out of the end of the barrel (legally).

A hand gun is made for fighting your way to a long gun, that being said a 9mm may expand but a 45 don't shrink.

Yes a 9mm or .380 is more than capable of dropping an intruder provided it hits the right location on his/her body. Sticking to your question in regards to the ideal compact handgun, I would go Glock 19 or S&W M&Pc 9mm. Of course this is just my opinion.

What about an M249? That will stop em!
