It's hard to surpass the M&P's.

Changeable palm swells
Fully ambidextrous features
3 slot accessory rail
Stainless steel chassis
Fully supported chamber
Metal sights

I also like the PPQ and the FNx series of pistols.

Maybe first think of what size pistol you want and what will its purpose be. My polymer gun is the Beretta Nano. It's a sub compact 9mm. It's quite reliable and aims quite naturally. It certainly looks different from xd/M&P/Glock and it's a Beretta so it's reliable.

I cannot get an M&P over here. Are they an improved Glock. I hear great things. Best Polymer over here is made by HK. The Walther polymer is better then Glock, has better trigger. Glock is the other poly in stores. Glock comes in last with civilians over here as far as sales and popularity. Glock is truly an American gun.

Why would anyone buy a polymer pistol if they didn't have to?

I've also got a strong desire for a new full-size polymer pistol. My leading candidates are the SA XDM .45 or the M&P .45. It's basically going to come down to whichever one I find first at a reasonable price.

If that first, yes. If the second, no. I think you mean't the first.

The M&P and Glock are both polymer pistols. After that the similarities just about end.

I think the M&P is better made. That's my opinion. It's also a lot more comfortable, and the steel chassis is a step up.

Just out of curiosity what models would you guess are the highest selling hk's and walthers over there? I would guess whatever they are would be 9mm?

I agree. The m&p is the next step in evolution of the glock like design. I still like my glock tho. Probably just because I had it so long with no problems. If its between glock and m&p im going with a smith, recoil feels slightly smoother as well.
