I am looking at a Taurus Pt111 9mm. I am not very familiar with this gun. When the action is open, the barrel has a bit of play in it. Is this normal? I believe it is a first generation.

While I'm not a Taurus fan, it's normal for a barrel to be able to move when the slide is open. The barrels lock into position when the slide is fully closed...
