In the past Taurus has been a gamble, you never know whether you'll be lucky. I think they're improving lately but can't be sure. FWIW, I have two Tauruses that are good guns but you hear plenty of horror stories as well.
If you do go with a Taurus, check it out carefully as you would any firearm. If you have a knowledgeable buddy, take him with you to the LGS and have him field strip and inspect before you buy.
