DO NOT BUY THE BG 380 AS A PLINKER OR RANGE GUN! YOU WILL REGRET IT!
First choice would be a 22. Second choice would be a 9mm.

We need to hit the range Scott! My wife would love to shoot that before I buy her one!

Maybe a Beretta model 92 or Ninety-Two would be OK. The guns are big and heavy enough so that recoil won't be any big deal, shoot relatively cheap 9MM ammo, and shoot straight enough for her to enjoy using them. They are easy to take down for cleaning and to reassemble. Racking the slide is pretty easy for loading them. They are dependable and pretty good looking. They make holes in the target big enough to be easy to see. And if she decides to put it to use for self-defense, they would fill the bill well.

Wife's first handgun
I would suggest go to your local gun range that rents different handguns. Let her try different calibers sizes she what feels comfortable to her. Also being first gun try striker fired handguns. Trigger pull not as stiff as double action trigger pull. I.e xd s&w,mp,glock, and khar

I have just bought the Ruger LCR 38 SPL and love that little rascal. It has a pretty smooth pull, recoil is not too bad (I don't use +P loads) and with the laser resighted for about 20' rather than the factory 50, I can do a decent job of getting 5 in a half-dollar. Great size and weight for CC and for PD I feel much better having that laser on there. Don't know if it bothers the bad guys or not, but if I looked down and saw that red dot on my chest, I think I would have second thoughts!

glock17owner The bersa just happen to be a solid pistol for the money. And no I don't own one but my youngest cc's one and has been dependable.

Let's face it, it is whatever she likes. I have a friend that shot an IDPA BUG match with the Bodyguard and took first place even against the guys that were shooting with the full size guns. I would look at the next size up, the Shield. A person told me that there is a big reduction of recoil between the LCP and Shield. My wife likes the Shield but the 9mm version is a little hard to find right now.
