Silly question probably

I live in Georgia
If i bought a handgun legally and i decided to give it to a friend who was of age could i just hand it to him?

Georgia does not have gun "registration". If your friend is also a resident of Georgia, and is not a person prohibited from owning a gun, yes, you can. Link to Georgia gun laws: http://www.georgiapacking.org/law.php

Sounds like you might be considering a 'straw buy'. You might want to be careful there and make sure that he is of age and not going to use it for nefarious purposes.

I definitely would not do that. Not to say your friend would do anything, but if something did happen with that gun I'm sure the store could trace it back to you. In my opinion, its way too risky.

If he can own a handgun then why doesn't he just go buy it himself?

if you legitimately bought the gun and later found that it did not suit your needs/wants and or your friend was a friend in need AND some degree of time elapsed between the purchase and the gift AND the friend is not otherwise prohibited from owning or possessing a handgun, then you should be OK.

Degree of time - I cannot answer how long this should be. A year and you are almost assuredly OK. A week and you are almost assuredly not OK. Something in between? I Dunno.

What if you wanted to give it to someone as a birthday present? you couldn't buy a new gun, wrap it up and give it to them?

I have a birthday coming up next year, as a matter of fact! Specific weapon and mailing address to follow...... :D

If you havn't bought the gun yet, I would just give the money to my "friend" and let him/her buy it (of course times are getting tough and your friend might pay the rent with the money instead). If you want to give a gun you have as a gift, and the receiptant can legally own a gun (as far as you know, remember you aren't required to do a background check) then give it to them. That said, I would be darn sure that I wanted to give someone a gun. Even with all the "i's" dotted and "t's" crossed that's a big decision and a bigger responsibility,,,,, for both of you.

If it is someone you would trust your life with then I say hell yeah. Give it to them. I got a rifle from my parents for my birthday when I was younger.:D
