The range where I'm a member has ranges for action pistol shooting. They hold the IPSC and IDPA competitions there and although I don't shoot competitively, I have qualified to use those ranges.

Now, after taking my CCW class where we shot from behind barriers and kneeling, standing and performing live magazine changes, I plan on practicing there rather than standing at a table at the regular pistol range.

I want to get proficient at drawing and firing and hitting where I point. I now realize that my pistol skills don't translate well to a gunfight.

I may even start competing to hone my currently very basic skills.

It's tough to admit, because I'm a pretty fair pistol shot, but life is way more important than ego.
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”Samuel Adams

I also practice in my yard with different types of targets we had to sight in my father in-law .270 short mag at 300 yards for his African trip last month. You do need to use different styles including reloading because you never know the situation of where when or how you might need to use your gun.
