U can find a used ruger p series for those prices. Good reliable pistols with good accuracy. Gonna have to look around a bit though

I would start with local pawn shops. Be picky and don't buy the first one you like and don't pay the price on the tag and don't lead off with your exact price range (unless you know the shop staff really well). I would try to take a buddy who is knowledgable about handguns. If you don't have such a buddy, go look at and handle as many different pistols as you are able to and then go home and do some research online.

Online I would look at CDNN, j & g sales, for police trade-ins.

I would second the Ruger p series as a bang for the buck choice, though it wouldn't be the easiest to conceal carry.

Edit. I am not a .40 cal fan myself, but http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=F1SWMP40&name=Smith+%26+Wesson+M %26P+.40+Pistol&groupid=3

Realize that a firearm purchased online will have to be shipped not to your home, but to a local FFL who will charge $20 or more to run a 4473 background check on you. Find the right FFL and this will be cheap and easy.

Buds has a good rep on new stuff.

It's a well made gun. I have held one. The slide is stiff like many other new guns,..with a few hundred rounds it loosens up I'm told. Come with two mags. Order at least 1-2 more. You can also order a used one from J&G sales,...they have 32's for 200, and 9mm Russian guns made in Serbia for 249& 259...

If a 22 is what you are looking for, the Ruger 22/45 is a top notch gun. If you are looking for something for self defense...you still can't go wrong with a Ruger. I have a 22/45, a P95, A New Model Vaquero and a New Model Super Blackhawk. I also had a P90. Every one of them were very good guns. I have seen several people shooting the SR9 in competition. They perform quite well. I would not be afraid to buy a used gun with the Ruger brand on it.

The P series is known for being very reliable. A good buddy of mine had a P95 for a long time; it was a good solid pistol.

The price doesn't sound bad if it is in good condition. J & g sales has them for a similar price, but that would require shipping and ffl fee.

Are you sure you want a dao, double action only, pistol? That means you will have a trigger pull that cocks the hammer and releases the hammer each time pull the trigger. This will give a consistent trigger pull, but it won't be as lite or short as would a cocked trigger pull on a da/sa pistol.

If you are looking for your first range gun, then the obvious choice is 22lr. In that case, there are quite a few good guns to choose from in the $300 range.

If you are looking for something for self defense as well, then it gets much tougher. 22lr is better than a sharp stick, but it's no one's choice for self defense. Unless you just can't take the recoil, 38 or 9mm would be a better choice for a first self defense gun. In that case, you need a little more money, or be patient to come across the right used gun.

I seen somewhere that Buds has Rock Island 45s on sale for $329. That's a hell of a deal. I've never bought anything from Buds though.
