Default S&W Sigma vs. Ruger P95

I have a buddy who wants a semi-auto for home defense and plinking. This would be his first handgun so he is looking to not spend to much. After doing some looking he thinks its between a S&W Sigma and a Ruger P95.

What are you guys thoughts on the two? I don't think cc is in his plans at the start but is not out of the question in the future. Being a gun owner for only a couple years I don't have enough firearms knowledge to advise him well.

Thanks and I appreciate the input!

Well, the Sigma fanboy in me says Sigma but the logical side says go with the Ruger. I am going to side with the Ruger out of the two choices.

Go and have him check them both out and see which one he likes best. Only he will know for sure. Well, that wasn't much help.

+1 for the Ruger, but Shihan's right - have him at least hold and point both, see which feels better. If possible, let him shoot both.

I am a S&W guy but ...The Ruger P series is a better pistol for the same price. I own a few Ruger P series including a P95 and truly enjoy them for the purpose you expressed. Fun to shoot, good for densense and a quality firearm overall. The sigma just isn't in the same field IMHO.

Both are good guns for the money. the sigma just needs a simple do-it-yourself mod to make the crappy trigger lighter. The Ruger is O.K. out of the box. That is not to say the Ruger's trigger is match grade. It's just available in different configurations.
In this price range, I'd buy which ever one I could buy cheaper.

The Sigma is a hair ligher, holds one extra round and is striker fire, the Ruger is hammer fire.I own a P95 and it is an excellent gun,I chose it over striker fire guns because I like the hammer, makes me feel safer.

I have both and they are both good pistols. The Sigma fits my hand much better and I don't find the trigger all that difficult. I don't think you could go wrong with either. I honestly think the Sigma is the best deal out there right now, especially with the rebate. Academy has had them recently for @299. before rebate. Hard to beat.

also have both, also agree that the sigma feels better in the hand.

given the choice though, i still prefer hammer fired pistols.

Thanks everyone! Its good to know they are both good guns. I think we are going to find some place that rents them and put a few round through both. I figger there's no better way to judge.

Thanks again for the help!
