Default S&W model 59

Just recently purchased a smith and Wesson model 59 with a polished aluminum frame and nickel plated slide, this is my first pistol and was just wondering if anyone knew any info about them and if there is any kind of aftermarket upgrades I can make. Thanks

Yea that's what I figured, I like the gun alot but I want to put my touch on it, I want a new rear sight, polished trigger and a skeletonized hammer. But all I can find is grips. And would you know if 5906 mags will fit these cuz I can't find any for a 59. Thanks for the info

I wanted to "spiff" mine up too, but really couldnt find much for it. The 5906 mags should work, as I believe all 59 series mags will work. I think I had a 5906 mag for mine and it worked, the floorplate was a little different. I do really recommend the Pachmars, they make the pistol a little less "blocky"

Mines blued, and was a old police pistol. I dont think Ive ever seen a nickle plated one..

Yea mine was ex police too, how long have you has yours for, I got mine for 450. It seemed like a good price for an almost flawless gun that is that old. I did a little research and it was made in late 74 early 75.

The 5906 mags should NOT work. The 59 was the first of the "Wonder Nines". It has been supplanted by the 459 then 5906 ultimately being abandoned as a platform for handguns by S&W. Grips are about the only thing out there for upgrade. The front sight is integral to the slide so if cannot be easily replaced. The rear sight was very small and difficult to use and no upgrades available. Enjoy your pistol as is, it may actually be collectible someday.

Well that's what I was afraid of. Looks like I'm just gonna have to get something more common to upgrade, I was at a local gun shop today and was interested in a magnum research desert eagle 1911. But It was the first one I have seen so I'm gonna have to see the reviews before I make a decision. It was 800 and for that much I could get a nice kimber or sig 1911.

I'm pretty sure 5906 mags will work in the older models like the 59. Don't think the grips will though.

This link shouldillustrate what's compatible. Factory S&W mags are pretty expensive but you can get the Mec-Gar 17rds for about $24 at CDNN.

And Mec-Gar makes the factory magazines for about half the new semi-autos out there.
