DefaultS&W 39-2

My mom just gave me a S&W she had and won't use. It's a model 39-2 9mm. It needs some rear sights (she put whiteout on them go figure) - or maybe I can take some acetone and take it off.

Anyone have one of these? Was thinking of selling/trading for 1911. Anyone know what's it worth?

Try a cotton swab and some alcohol 1st. Hoppes might work also. The 39 is a very nice pistol. Shoot it before you trade it. You might like it and that one looks to be in very good shape. Smith put some quality into their guns then.

Value varies RADICALLY depending on steel framed (rare) or alloy frame. Have some vague recollection of "issues" with feeding anything but round nose ammo- fixed in the 39-2. Several different engineering changes (39, 39-1, 39-2, etc).

The steel frame early 39s are super rare. The 39-2 is a very good rugged handgun. They have single stack Mags. S&W engineers used the German Walther P-38 as a Modl. for this Dbl.Action handgun. The 39-2 was chambered in 9MM Parabelium and .30 Luger. Most American guns are 9MM.

The Model 39-2 was also produced in limited numbers with a steel frame.
It could be worth a couple bucks
