I just bought two new handguns. Nothing in the manufacturers instructions says anything about preparing the guns for the first range trip. Is there a standard procedure for lubrication prior to the maiden voyage?

Well when it comes to your 1911 I would do a general field strip and remove the grips give it a few shots of Gun scrubber on the internal parts as well as the frame and slide inside and out wipe her down dry and then use some Break Free inside and out .
I have two Daly 1911's made by Armscor and they came covered in a thick oil that felt more like a preservative to prevent rust than a good lubricant .
It couldn't hurt to do the same thing to your S&W prior to firing .
