I was at a LGS and I was checking out a surplus Polish P64 in 9mm Makarov. I didn't know much about them so I checked out a few reviews on youtube all seemed positive. Does anyone have any experience with them and would they recommend me going back and picking it up? $200 with holster and extra mag.

Not a bad price. Nice little shooter, but for the money, I prefer the CZ82.

I bought one from JG Sales several years ago when they were under $200. The one I bought was in pristine condition and looked like it might have never seen any firing. They are good, solid guns for work and/or utility purposes. The DA trigger pull is very stiff, but can be helped with a Wolfe spring kit. The thin profile frame and 9x18 round create for a nasty recoiling little gun. A stiffer recoil spring can help, but 100 is about the most you'll want to shoot at one time. They will give the web of your hand a beating. I keep mine in the console of my truck and shoot it to keep proficient. I do NOT take it to the range for fun shooting though. It just depends on what you plan on using the gun for.

Sounds good. Be sure to post some pictures after you get it home! There is also a forum strictly dedicated to the P-64. Lots of good guys with tons of technical knowledge. If you can't find an answer to a question in other places first, give them a try over there. I was active over there back when I first bought mine, but I've since let that fizzle out.

Very good pistol from the Eastern Bloc. Picked up one for a friend a while back, pristine and looked unfired also. He loves his. For a budget priced pistol, they are good buys. They're not as smooth or refined as the PPK it's designed after, but a reliable and rugged weapon none the less. Most of the Makarov calibered pistols are getting in short supply now, I'm told.

How similar in design and function are these pistols to the FEG pistols they resemble?

For the money and round it's a great gun and, following everything everyone said about it already I'll add that the recoil I do not mind but the stock DOUBLE ACTION trigger pull needs the Wolfe spring. Additionaly, they are surprisingly accurate (despite my having to "pinky" the diminutive gun) -- I was amazed the first time I took it to the range. I effectively stopped using my oversized, overweight, "I don't care what happens to it" Makarov for the P-64.

Think of it in the family of ComBlock military copies; in this case of the Walther PPK to the Makarov's being an obvious cheap copy of a Walther PP. Load it with some Buffalo Bore and you have an exceptional defense/carry arm -- different doctrine I know, but how the Polish Army ever figured it was the right design for their standard military sidearm I'll never quite figure. I'm just glad they did, and that Reagan won The Cold War...
