Self defense, target, carry in vehicle, want a 40 because I don't care to much on the 9mm or 380.

Started out with the same thoughts. Shot various .45, .40 and wound up with a Sig P226 9mm.

If you want to enjoy shooting I'd look at the .45ACP or the 9mm, NOT the .40 Small & Weak!

Get her dirty, then clean her so she starts to respect you. When her trust is complete, she will serve you well for a lifetime!

I have a Sig p229. I love it. My dad has a sig sp2022 he loves it. One is all metal, one is polymer both shoot great and carry well.
Both can be found in .40cal.
You might also look at the p239 also available in .40cal
I had a friend who bought a H&K .40cal and then sold it off for a 9mm. It was just to expensive to shoot enough to get good with.

Go to a range where why you can rent guns to try and shoot everything you can get your hands on.

Nick

I own a Ruger Sr40. I like it a lot. Shoots well, no issues, good recoil I guess. I've been looking at the Glock 27. It's a subcompact. I believe it holds 9+1
