Need advice-FM Detective Hi Power clone
I have the opportunity to get an FM Detective cheap but I'm a little leary of what I see at the front sight area. It appears that someone in the past has tried to remove or replace the front sight. The current sight is pinned through a front bushing-like cylinder that protrudes from the muzzle end of the slide and fits flush with the slide internally. Both the sight and this bushing-like part move when the slide moves and wiggle around a lot. The bushing cannot be removed unless the whole front sight were to be removed. I checked my real Browning Hi Power and it has the same system. The work looks shoddy and the "bushing" appears to be damaged or at least not professional looking on the inside so I'm concerned. Is the part available for a gunsmith to replace the "bushing" and start over with a new sight? OR could I get a regular HP slide/barrel somewhere and replace the shorty? I have a quality HP but this is the first Argentine Detective I have seen. It is heavy and beastly and robust looking and I think I like it and, as with a 1911, could do damage if thrown but I would like to shoot it and be able to hit something. I just dont know much about them and need advice.

I had an FM Hi Power and practically cried when I sold it. FM's are excellent pistols.

You can send the slide to Novak's and have them replace the sights with something that you would prefer. I'm partial to low profile three dot sights myself. If the feedramp is humped, you can also have them de-hump it and polish it and throat the chamber. They do outstanding Hi Power work.

Welcome here. When you get the chance, head over to the Introductions thread and introduce yourself to the gang.

Is this the same pistol that J&G has for sale? Argentine FM 90 Hi-Power, 9mm. I just saw them on their web site and was interested in one but was looking for some more information on them that might help me in purchasing one.

The Detective model has a shorter barrel The one J&G is selling is the full size model.

Spend the extra for the excellent condition model. It's a good price and you'll be glad you did.

Mine is the short barrel detective version.

Wow... those Argentine FM HP's for less than $350 is the perfect base/donor for a Robar Custom HP!

Novak's does a pretty fair job on Hi Powers too.
