Where does one draw the distinction of "A pistol is a semi, and not a revolver"?
I don't want to nit pick, but I'm going to, so here I go.
The word pistol came about alongside the advent of the single shot BP PISTOL. And refers pretty much to all handguns.
I am donning my flame suit, and am telling you all
A PISTOL is pretty much any firearm designed with the intent of being fired one handedly, and it has been this way throughout the very history of firearms. If you lived during the revolution, a single shot BP pistol was a pistol. If during the civil war, a revolving pistol was a pistol. If you went with me to ghan and iraq, the M9 is a pistol. If you were hanging with my grandfather in Korea, or his older brothers in Germany, the Colt 1911 was also in the same category.

Pistol is a catch all very similar to the term Hand gun.
