What about ejector position? The cases aren't the same diameter so will the ejector work? Is the recoil spring the same?

As far as I understand everything else works you just need the barrel and different mags.

Just called gunsmith. Just as I thought, it won't work. Different breechface cut different ejector position. The only caliber it works on is a 357 & a 40 only because is it is the same diameter at the base.

There is a conversion barrel that allows you to shoot a 9mm barrel in a .40 sw M&P. Replace barrel and magazine and You can shoot either.

I'd like to know what caused that, was the weapon properly maintained, what kind of preliminary damage may have been done that could have been corrected before that happened, and if the gun was completely stock.

Completely stock, no prior damage, and cleaned on a regular basis. Upon inspection, I found the barrel cracked 3/4 around in front of the chamber portion of the barrel. I'm wondering if the recoil spring became weak over time ...causing the barrel to absorb the recoil?

After doing just a little bit of very quick research, the only semi consistent issue I've seen so far is FTEs with 9mm WWB in the corresponding chambering.

I'm very interested in learning more about this broken down .40. That's the same gun my mom carries, so needless to say, I'm just a little concerned.

Every gun is subject to catastrophic failure, I don't care who the maker is. Guns are a device that contain a controlled explosion, therefore, they are susceptible to exploding by the very nature of the job they do. I want to know how common this type of failure is, and I simply can't find anything other than what I already mentioned.

Well, I did find a report of one barrel rupturing. Exactly one.

You posted before I was done typing. I suppose the scenario you thought of is possible, how many rounds had been through it?
