Was it the Inter arms PPK? The S & W PPKs has a larger beaver tail that help prevents the slide from cutting in to your hand. I own a PPK/s and find it is a great shooter very accurate and manageable recoil. You can rack the slide with one hand. It does work I tried it.

I really like my Taurus TCP. Small, light, and easy to conceal. I can rack mine easily enough.
