A used G19 or 17 would do you well. Very easy to find.

Ruger P95 for the budget win.

Marc, have you tried the Mecgar mags? Nice finish on them and 17 round capacity.

I have shot thousands of rounds through my Beretta PX4, Glock, and SA XDm. Love them all for different reasons but if I had to throw away 2 and keep one, I would keep the XDm.

I would recommend:

Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm
CZ75B 9mm
SIG Sauer SP2022 9mm
Glock 17 9mm

Also, if you're willing to look at the surplus or used market

Widners Reloading has SIG Sauer P228's, P226's, and P6's (German Police P225 variants) for around $400.00. Those would also make a great buy.

The Beretta PX4 is also very nice polymer framed handgun.

The SIG Sauer P250 is also nice, however it is Double Action Only.

Not sure if it's been mentioned or not, but if you don't have much money, look at the EAA Witness line. I have had fantastic success with 6 different EAA/Witness pistols. And if you get a Glock, plan on staying with them or having to re-learn muscle memory due to the "unique" grip angle that is unlike any other pistol anywhere. Don't flame me. I'm not saying it's bad (explicitly), just different
