What is your price range considered for "cheap"?
Compact, sub compact or full size?
Home defense, self defense or target shooting?
There are many options but without specifics.. the list is endless.

Bersa .40, available in a compact or fullsize. Prices in area of $400. If you want cheaper than that, get a Hipoint.

Ive never fired or even held the .40 but I'll stand behind the reliability and quality of my C9.
I agree with everyone else. Buy the hi-point, if you don't like it.. your not really taking any loss.

How cheap? Picked up an Springfield .40 XDm for $625 with night sights, shot 500 out of the box with one failure to feed which was probably because of the alloy non-brass ammo I was using.

SIG SP2022 in a 40, somewhere under $425 now. Put that against anything in this price range.
